Celebris FX 5200M

The Celebris FX 5200M ($4,060 street), from Digital Equipment Corp., is a network-ready, easy-to-service Pentium MMX machine for the mainstream commercial user who wants top-notch performance. (With an upgrade to 64MB of RAM, the price is $4,380.) The Celebris was a competitive performer on our benchmark and applications tests, a fact that is welcome in view of the comparatively high price. Digital's Celebris and Venturis PC lines will continue to include standard Pentiums for users seeking good value and decent performance.

The Celebris came outfitted with EDO DRAM and 512K of L2 cache. A 2GB Fast ATA-2 hard disk (the Quantum Fireball) and a Matrox Millennium graphics card with 4MB of WRAM drive the disk and graphics subsystems. The system was an average performer on all benchmark tests except CD-ROM WinMark 97, on which it turned in an above-average score. Its PhotoDeluxe Soften Image and Unsharpen Mask times were slower than the average, but the other applications test scores were average except for an above-average Photoshop Gaussian Blur result.

The DMI-compliant Celebris also features a MIF browser, integrated 10Base-T Ethernet support (upgradable to 100Base-T), a 17-inch Digital-branded LG Electronics monitor, and an 8X Toshiba CD-ROM drive. A sound card from Creative Labs (the Sound Blaster 16) and Goldmedia speakers make up the audio subsystem.

If you're willing to pay the price, the Celebris FX 5200M represents a good choice for corporate installations.
